Attendance Policy

Students must attend school regularly and be on time in order to benefit from the instructional program. We work hard to develop habits of punctuality and self-discipline in the students. Good attendance helps create successful, confident students. Recognizing the relationship between student attendance and achievement, Vickery teachers have made high student achievement and attendance school-wide goals.

The state law requires students to be in attendance for at least 90% of the school year in order to receive credit. Many interventions are put into place when students have excessive tardies and absences. If early interventions do not help, attendance problems are handled through a local judge in a court setting.

 

  

Parents should notify the school of student absences by calling the school office by 10:00 am. A phone call will be acceptable verification of your child’s absence. Otherwise, a note will be needed upon his/her return to school. The note should give a brief reason for the absence, the date the child was absent, and the signature of the parent/guardian. An excused absence is one which results from personal illness, sickness or death in the family, quarantine, and weather or road conditions making transportation to school dangerous. There may be other circumstances which will result in an excused absence with PRIOR APPROVAL from the principal. Voice messages can be left from 3:35 pm to 7:35 am if you wish to record your child’s absence when the school office is closed. Make-up work may be requested through the office if your child has missed three or more consecutive days of school.

 

 

If a student arrives at school after 7:45 am, he/she will need to go to the office before going to the classroom. Students must have a tardy slip in order to be admitted to the classroom after 7:45 am. Parents will be notified of excessive tardies by the classroom teacher and/or a school administrator. Excessive tardies can result in the intervention of a judge in a court setting.
